6 Things About Moving Into Your Own Home | Lifestyle

A bit of a different post today, I thought I'd break up all of the Halloween stuff which has been going down on Dungarees & Donuts and feature something a little bit different. Most of you are probably aware if you follow me on Twitter, in July I moved into my own house and it is one of the best feelings in world. I thought I'd share some of my first thoughts, feelings and other stuff which you will go through when moving into your own house! P.S. it's okay to need help or feel like you're never going to be unpacked for a while. Just take a breath, you've got this!

1. Ikea will become your new best friend, I don't even say this lightly. Moving into a house is expensive especially when you have no furniture, can life be like The Sims please? Wouldn't mind a games machine and a new bed.

2. You will be unpacking for the next ten years, *ok more like 3 months* basically the same right?

3. You're gonna be so skint for a while, moving into your own house is the best feeling and also the worst. Waiting for the wages to come in each month seem to be further and further apart. It's okay to get some additional help for a while. Vivus are a short term lending solution and perfect for those who need to borrow a little bit of extra money until Payday (Only take what you can afford to pay back, of course!)

4. You'll develop your own ways. You know how when you live at home and your parents have their systems and ways of doing things? When you're younger you think they're just doing it to be annoying but you soon realise it's actually for a reason.

5. You can do what YOU want. A bath at 3am? Why the heck not. A whole room for your shoes, you can so do that. You can design your kitchen how you want it, you can make your house look and feel amazing.

6. Bills are crazy expensive! After living in a student house to moving into your own house which involves lots of bills including council tax *ouch* it sure does take some getting used to that's for sure.

What are your tips for people moving into their first home?

  3. Great tips. I found when I moved in my own you remember all the little things you forget that you need to buy like kitchen roll, air fresheners and bin bags. x

  5. Ikea is absolutely my best friend at the moment (apart from all the building that comes with it!). I love that I live in my own little pad now, but hate all the adult stuff like meter reading and taxes!

  6. Bills sure are a shock aren't they.
We've been homeowners for eight years now and IKEA is still our best friend when it comes to furniture - I'd love to start to upgrade some of it but with three small kids it's just not worth the investment yet.

  11. What a great list! The bath at 3am made me laugh...i've recently moved back with my parents and their rule is no showers etc past 9pm so that's always the first thing i look forward to. I don't need to do it late, but do because i can haha!! Ikea is cheaper and nicer designs! Hope it's feeling more like home now too :) x

  12. These are some great tips, I absolutely hate moving, we have only just got our curtains up in the lounge and bedroom properly today as I brought the wrong sizings so we've had to move things around while they got sorted.

  13. It really can be expensive. I don't know if people realize the amount of expenses besides the home cost that you experience.

  15. I agree with the Ikea point hahaha however I hate their new way of doing things!!! We have started to redo the house and took a trip there the other day, you now have to pick up multiple pieces to make your piece of furniture instead of giving you 1 or 2 boxes!!! Its so frustrating!!

  16. Unpacking is just as bad a packing for me, though it is a great excuse to have a final de-junk and chuck ut stuff you really do not need x

  18. Already some amazing tips in here! :) But one of mine is always that it's never too early to save up or start buying/wishing for as a gift when it comes to home stuff :P It's a whole lot more fun buying interior things than a vacuum cleaner or something for the kitchen :D

  19. When I moved house I swear I was in Ikea every other week buying a new piece of furniture with the money I had got that week. I had a garden chair and a coffee table as my only furniture for about a month haha
